8. FUND A NEED – SEEING IS BELIEVING
Post-pandemic, 37% of third graders were at grade-level reading and 63% were not. The pandemic created a wider gap in reading achievement, but as important, the pandemic revealed our failure at teaching reading and that failure has been ongoing for the last 25 years. The Sacramento Literacy Foundation is all about changing this trajectory so that all kids learn to read in Sacramento County and beyond. Tonight’s fund-a-need will be dedicated to giving children – primarily TK, K, 1st grade and 2nd grade – from our highest need communities diverse, high-quality books. We will give each child five books, because we know that reading five books is enough to hold onto previously achieved reading skills. We also know that most under resourced children don’t have books in their home and rarely see their lives reflected in the books they have access to at school. Part of helping our kids read, means getting them books where they can see themselves at the center. Dr. JaNay Brown-Wood, and Leticia Ordaz, here with us tonight, write children’s books with diverse protagonists so that more children can find themselves on the pages of literature. Help us give more than 4000 kids a bag of 5 high-quality diverse books to take home and read during the Summer. Let’s help kids in Sacramento read! Goal: $100,000.
