  8. FUND A NEED – Seeing is Believing Right now, only 42% of third graders are at grade-level reading and 58% are not. The gap in reading achievement is something we all need to concern ourselves with because reading and not reading is the single most important indicator of positive and negative life outcomes, respectively. If you cannot read, you cannot participate. What The pandemic revealed to parents, who had to become their child’s teacher, was that their kids could not read. It brought together advocates and educators who want to see this issue solved, and it is solvable! The Sacramento Literacy Foundation wants and supports all kids reading proficiently in Sacramento County and beyond. Tonight’s fund-a-need will be dedicated to giving children – primarily in TK, K, 1st grade and 2nd grade – from our highest need communities culturally relevant, high-quality books. We will give each child five books, because we know that reading five books is enough to hold onto previously achieved reading skills. We also know that most under-resourced children don’t have books in their home and rarely see their lives reflected in the books they have access to at school. Part of helping our kids read means getting them books in their homes. Help us give more than 6,000 kids a bag of five high-quality culturally relevant books to take home and read. Each bag of books costs an average of $40. If we reach our goal tonight, we will have raised enough funds for 4,000 bags of books – that’s 20,000 books!. You are the philanthropists that make this happen for Sacramento’s most under-resourced kids. Let’s help all kids in Sacramento read! Goal: $160,000.
